Cairo is not an ultra-conservative city, though as you’ll notice there are some varieties of dress that are more appropriate than others. For men, pants are more acceptable than shorts, although shorts are not culturally forbidden. Woman should avoid bearing their shoulders or wearing skirts or dresses that expose their knees. Students will find that some areas allow more liberal dress than others, such as beach and tourist areas, but in generalit’s encouraged to simply respect local etiquette and customs. When visiting mosques, or religious areas in general, women should completely cover their arms and wear headscarves.
